Application Closing date

  • The application form must reach the CAO office before the closing date of 30 September 2021
    for Higher Certificate, Diploma & Degree programmes.
  • Please refer to specific programmes for relevant closing dates, as some programmes close earlier than 30 September 2021.

Application Fee

  • Include the appropriate application fee of R250 (SA Citizen) / R300 (International applicants) when submitting your application form.
  • Make sure that your application AND fee reach the CAO before the closing date. Submission of a
    completed application form does not imply that you have been accepted as a student, or that you may
    register.
  • All applicants will be notified via email/SMS, of the outcome of their application.

The minimum entrance requirements for admission to the DUT for a South African applicant

Higher Certificate programmes:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English.

Diploma programmes:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum of achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 3 in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree programmes:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 4 in four NSC 20-credit subjects chosen from the NSC designated subject list.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

  • The higher education institutions of KwaZulu-Natal welcome applications from international applicants for their formal degree, diploma and certificate programmes.
  • Some institutions also offer the opportunity to study in South Africa for one semester or one year. DUT and UKZN do not accept international applicants into their access programmes.
  • Applications to study Medicine at UKZN are consider ONLY from citizens of Lesotho and Mauritius and applicants must apply via their governments.
  • You will require a study permit if you wish to come to South Africa to study. This does not apply to distance learning students who study in their home countries. .

Where to  send  application as an international applicant?

  • If you are applying for short-term study, apply directly to the institution.
  • If you are applying to UKZN only, apply directly to the institution.

Foreign qualifications

The following are considered to be equivalent to the South African degree entry requirements:

GCE:

Five passes in GCE including two at `A` level:

  • “A” level passes must be A, B, C, D or E
  • “O” level passes must be A, B or C

Five passes in GCE as well as four at AS level

  • “A” level passes must be A, B, C, D or E;
  • “O” level passes must be A, B or C; and
  • “AS” level passes must be A, B, C or D.

Applicants from SADC countries who have five passes at ‘O’ level, including English language, may be considered for diploma study.

HIGCSE/IGCSE:

Passes in five subjects, four of which must be at HIGCSE level:

    • HIGCSE passes must be 1, 2 or 3
    • IGCSE passes must be A, B or C

Applicants who wish to enter degree programmes are required to have passes in English language and one other language, and must usually have also passed Maths.

The Matriculation Board gives details of requirements for those with other qualifications. Applicants should apply for a ‘Foreign’ or ‘Foreign Conditional’ Matric Exemption from the Matriculation Board. Institutions will usually assist with this, or you can consult the Matriculation Board directly.

In order to login to upload your documents, you must have the following:

1. CAO/ID Number AND
2. Cellphone (with cell number entered on your application) OR
3. Access to your email (which was entered on your application)

AND you must have your documents saved in a file on your computer or on a memory stick/flash drive.

Minimum documents required

1. Copy of ID AND
2. Final Grade 11 Report (if you are in Grade 12) OR
3. Highest Qualification Achieved (if you have already completed Grade 12)

Further documents

  •  June Grade 12 Report (only if you are in Grade 12)
  • September/Trial Grade 12 Report (only if you are in Grade 12)
  • Any other documents requested
