The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Tuition and Fees 2022/2023

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based private land-grant research institution. Since its founding in 1861, MIT has played a pivotal role in the advancement of contemporary technology and science, placing it among the world’s top intellectual institutions.

MIT was founded in reaction to the United States’ expanding industrialization, and it followed the European polytechnic university model, emphasizing laboratory training in applied science and engineering. The MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Bates Center, and the Haystack Observatory, as well as related laboratories such as the Broad and Whitehead Institutes, are all located on the institute’s urban campus, which stretches for more than a mile (1.6 km) along the Charles River.

Composition of Students

There are 11,276 students at MIT. International students account for a third of the community (33 percent). There are 450 undergraduates and 2,796 graduate students among them. There are 334 special graduate and exchange/visiting students.

China has the highest percentage of students (27.15%), followed by India (8.69%) and Canada (8.69%). (6.56 percent ).

Because of the significant number of international students, MIT developed its own International Students Office. Students can get help with immigration, legal status, and life adjustments here.

It facilitates relationships among MIT’s diverse population as well as advocating for the school’s international community.

MIT Application Fee

  • Applying to MIT costs $75. However, fee waivers may be given to students who may not be able to afford this amount.
  • Graduate applicants pay the same minimal fee ($75) as university applicants. Despite this, certain departments, such as the Sloan School of Management, charge a higher fee of $250.

We review all financial aid awards against the same numbers. It is a (nearly) comprehensive schedule of costs and fees associated with an MIT education for those who don’t receive any aid.

Cost of attendance for the 2022–2023 academic year

EXPENSE COST DESCRIPTION
Tuition $55,510 It actually costs over double this amount for MIT to provide the cutting-edge research facilities and faculty to undergraduates, but we subsidize it down to this cost. This also includes basic health insurance   for the state of Massachusetts and will give you urgent care visits, mental health, and specialist care at no extra cost.
Student life fee $368 This helps fund student clubs, organizations, and the sports and fitness center. This fee covers your unlimited access to the gym, fitness classes, student organization events, and trips.
Housing $11,550 All first-year students are required to live on campus, but residence halls and living groups vary in cost. We’ll bill you in July for half of the most expensive double room on campus ($11,550), then adjust it based on your actual housing cost in September. Learn more at MIT Housing.
Meals $6,550 There are multiple dining plan options (including cooking for yourself), but for the purposes of figuring out your financial aid eligibility, we budget $6,550 per year for meals. Learn more at MIT Dining.
Books & supplies $840 This out-of-pocket expense can vary depending on the student, but we use this number to calculate your financial aid eligibility.
Personal expenses $2,202 This out-of-pocket expense varies a lot depending on the student, but we use this number to calculate your financial aid eligibility. This covers things like clothes, laundry, and entertainment.
Total $77,020 This is the “full” price, before any financial aid.
